Six years intensive rainfall observation in Mae Chaem Watershed, Northern Thailand

Kuraji Koichiro (1), Kowit Punyatrong (2)

To examine intra-seasonal variation in rainfall in a mountainous watershed under tropical monsoon climate in Thailand, the data obtained by GAME-T rain gauge network for two years in the Mae Chaem watershed, 3,858 km2, were analyzed. Tipping time data from 9 points located from the top of the mountain to the valley bottom were used. It was found that the coefficient of variation in 5-day rainfall among 9 sites was a useful indicator to understand seasonal transition. Using this indicator, rainy season was divided into five regimes i.e. pre-monsoon, early rainy, middle rainy, late rainy and post-monsoon regime. The seasonal transition of the altitudinal increase and the diurnal cycle in rainfall were analyzed using these regimes. It was found that all regimes have their original pattern of the altitudinal increase and diurnal cycle in rainfall.
