The Southwest Monsoon Associated Extreme Events Over Upper Thailand Sampan Thaikruawan Thai Meteorological Department Thailand Email: samp_rd@metnet.tmd.go.th Abstract Over the past decade, southwest monsoon has brought heavy falls to the Southeast Asia Region, and Thailand is no exception. The significant features, which could be pinned point as the extreme events associated with southwest monsoon can be classified into 2 categories: 1) the Heavy Falls associated with southwest monsoon, and 2) the Tropical Cyclones in the Andaman Sea. The Mae Ramat Floods and Landslides in May 2004 is one of the extreme events in the category 1, and the WangChin Flashfloods and mudslides in May 2002 is one the extreme events in the category 2. Both of the extreme events posed tremendous impacts on lives and properties of people in the northern communities of the Kingdom of Thailand. Not mentioned to lots of damages to prpoperties, the Mae Ramat Floods claimed the lives of 7 people, while the Wangchin Floods claimed the lives of 35 people in the areas with huge of losses.
