Title：Comparison of Simultaneous Rain Drop Size Distributions Estimated from
Two Surface Disdrometers and a UHF profiler
Abstract：
In support of the NASA Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Ground
Validation Program, a suite of surface instruments and vertical pointing
Doppler
radar profilers were deployed in central Florida to quantify the number and
size
of the rain drops reaching the surface. Analyzing simultaneous observations
>from
two surface disdrometers and one profiler revealed that the instrument
traditionally
used as the reference surface disdrometer underestimates the number of rain
drops
with diameters less than approximately 1.5 mm. The magnitude of the small drop
underestimation is proportional to the rain intensity. Underestimation of
the smaller
drops artificially increases the curvature of the rain drop size
distribution. This
increase impacts the interpretation of the precipitation processes and
biases the
ground-based observations used to develop and/or validate remote space-based
precipitation retrieval algorithms. These biases, if not removed, may
negatively
impact our estimates of the atmospheric energy budgets and our climate and
weather predictive skills.
