> Abstract:
> RECENT RESEARCH ON THE ASIAN-AUSTRALIAN MONSOON SYSTEM AT UCLA
> Michio Yanai and Xiaodong Liu
> Department of Atmospheric Sciences, University of California, Los
Angeles
>
> 1. INTERANNUAL VARIABILITY OF THE ASIAN-AUSTRALIAN MONSOON SYSTEM
>
> The interannual variability of rainfall associated with the Asian
and
> Australian summer monsoons and its relationship with ENSO are
studied.
> There is a significant correlation between the annual precipitation
amount
> over southern Asia and that over northern Australia when measured in
> "monsoon years" (Yasunari 1991). The rainfall amount associated with
the
> Asian summer monsoon has a significant correlation with the rainfall
due to
> the following Australian summer monsoon, but the preceding
Australian
> monsoon rainfall has no significant correlation with the succeeding
Asian
> monsoon rainfall. An Asian- Australian monsoon index (AAI) is
proposed
> using a combination of precipitation for both southern Asia and
northern
> Australia. AAI has a high positive correlation with SOI and a high
negative
> correlation with SST anomaly in the equatorial eastern Pacific Ocean.
The
> SST anomaly in the eastern Pacific, with the seasonal displacement of
the
> Walker circulation, controls the variability of precipitation in
southern
> Asia and northern Australia. The effect of the SST anomaly of the
Indian
> Ocean on the variability of the Asian-Australian monsoon system is
also
> discussed.
>
> 2. IMPACT OF THE MONSOON RAINFALL ON GLOBAL TROPOSPHERIC TEMPERATURE
>
> Relationship between the Indian monsoon rainfall and the
tropospheric
> temperature over the globe is examined by using the correlation and
> singular value decomposition (SVD) analyses. (i) The June-September
> all-India rainfall (AIR) has a significant positive correlation with
the
> tropospheric (200-600 hPa) temperature of September and October over
the
> Eurasian continent. The highest correlation is located in western
Eurasia.
> There are also regions with positive correlation in the Southern
Hemisphere
> subtropics. (ii) The spatial structure of the first SVD mode for OLR
> anomalies shows the coherent variations in convective activity from
the
> northern tropical Africa to India. The pattern of the first SVD mode
for
> 300-hPa temperature anomalies shows a distribution nearly symmetric
with
> respect to the equator. (iii) The observed warming in the upper
troposphere
> during the anomalous summer monsoon rainfall is a result of
large-scale
> subsidence and thermal advection dynamically induced by anomalous
tropical
> heating.
