Dear Colleague,
Science and organizing committee of ISI 2001, JST, IAEA, and EC are inviting
you to participate in the First International Symposium on Isotopomers. The
symposium will be held on 23-26 July, 2001 in Yokohama, a port city facing
to Pacific 30 km south of Tokyo, Japan, covering isotope studies of
important molecules. The full text including registration forms and updated

2nd Circular and Call for Papers (Essentials)
International Symposium on Isotopomers (ISI 2001)
Yokohama, Japan, 23-26 July, 2001

Background: Isotopes have been used to trace material cycles in the
atmosphere, the oceans, the terrestrial environment and the biosphere.
Researches have been developing from single isotope analysis to
multi-isotope analysis. The site-specific analyses of isotopes are
progressing in isotope-containing molecular species, isotopomers, such as
organic molecules on IRMS and/or site-specific NMR, O3, N2O and others very
recently by several determining methods. The term, isotopomer
(isotope-containing molecules), includes two aspects: multi-isotopes and
intramolecular isotope distributions. Since the term, isotopomer, is
relatively new, it is accepted in this Symposium as a widely defined term
including isotopes.
Objective: The focus of the Symposium is to exchange the latest scientific
achievements in the measurement and data analysis of isotopomers from the
studies of environmental changes to further application in a variety of
fields. The Symposium will call for papers from a wide area of researches on
isotope-containing molecules with or without site-specific information to
achieve this objective as follows.
Methodology innovations and their state of the art for the measurement of
isotopomers by mass spectrometers, tunable diode laser absorption
spectrometers, FTIR, site-specific NMR, and others.
Synthesis and maintenance of isotopomer standard materials and
inter-laboratory calibrations.
Observations of isotopomer variations in the atmosphere, the oceans, the
terrestrial environment and the biosphere.
Theoretical considerations and simulation experiments on the equilibrium
and kinetic isotopomer effects of the important processes and mechanisms.
Estimates of the cycles of materials by data simulation analysis and/or
models.
Further applications of isotopomers in various fields.
The papers to be presented at the Symposium will be composed of invited
papers, accepted oral and poster papers. Participation by younger
generations as well as by newcomers in the field of molecular based isotope
studies is encouraged.

Date and Venue of the Symposium: The Symposium will be held for 3 days from
24 to 26 July (Tuesday to Thursday) in 2001. Registration and icebreaker
party is scheduled in the evening of 23 July. The sessions are in the
daytime of 24 to 26, and the symposium banquet with a special session is
scheduled in the evening of 25 July at the Sankeien Garden, (URL:
http://city.yokohama.jp/ne/sights/spot/h/sankei-e.html), a traditional
garden of Japanese historical mansion facing to the Pacific. The venue for
the Symposium is Yokohama Symposia

to the Yokohama port. Yokohama is the historical city for opening of the
once and long closed Japan 100 years ago, one of the main site of the 2002
World Cup also, 1.5 hr direct limousine and/or express train from Narita
Int'l Air Port, and 30 km south of Tokyo down town.
Important dates of the Symposium: The schedule of the Symposium is as follows:
10 April 2001: Deadline for submission of short abstracts of 200
words for the review for the program. Deadline for early registration.
20 June 2001: Deadline for submission of extended abstracts.
Deadline for hotel reservations and late registrations. Final announcement.
23-26 July 2001: International Symposium on Isotopomers, submission
of manuscripts for the proceedings.

Registration:
All participants should complete the Symposium Registration Form (Form A,
attached at the end of this information package) and send it by e-mail or
fax to JTB/Yokohama Office, together with the payments. No registration fee
except for food and beverages is charged to participants.
Letter of Invitation
If requested by a participant, the Organizing Committee will send a letter
of invitation. This invitation letter is intended specifically to assist the
participant in obtaining travel funds or appropriate visas and does not
imply any financial support. Written requests in any form should be sent to
Symposium Secretariat.
Travel Support:
Limited travel support is available for the scientists who may have
difficulties in obtaining travel fund to attend the Symposium. Because of
the limited amount of funding available for this purpose, the Organizing
Committee reserves the right to decide who will receive travel support. To
request travel support either fully or partly, please contact the Symposium
Secretariat.

Yokohama, located 30 km south of Tokyo, is the second largest city in Japan.
The city dates back to 1859 when the port was first opened to foreign trade.
Since then the port has grown in step with Japanese economic growth. Like
many other port cities, Yokohama has a distinct cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Chinatown and the international shopping streets have allured Japanese
tourists for many years while many foreign nationals in Japan have found a
