ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPER

International Symposium on
LUCC Contribution to Asian Environmental Problems
Dec.13-14, 2001

Venue: Science Council of Japan

Organized by: LUCC-Japan Committee, Science Council of Japan

Supported by: IGU-LUCC (International Geographical Union)
CIGR International Commission on Agricultural Engineering, Section I
Center for Spatial Information Science, The University of Tokyo

PURPOSE
The Land Use and Land Cover Change (LUCC) Project is a joint core project of the International
Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) and the International Human Dimensions Programme
on Global Environmental Change (IHDP). LUCC, through the understanding of the land use and
land cover change processes, aims at improving the understanding of the dynamics of the
interactions between human activities and natural resource utilizations, and the impacts such
change mechanisms may have on other components of the earth system ? land, water and the
ecosystem. The integration of remote sensing and GIS techniques in the study, analysis and
modelling of the land use and land cover change processes offers an unprecedented improvement
in the scientific understanding of these natural and man-made processes and phenomena. Also,
the scientific investigation, systematic Earth observation and data management using GIS will
not only help in better scientific understanding by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of
the datasets, but also help to guide and contribute towards issues of policy in the global
environmental change arena.

The Scope of this Symposium is to explore the current LUCC research in the Asian region and to
have a forum for discussion on the ways to approach the major environmental issues of the Asian
region. In addition to focusing on the LUCC studies and methodologies employed such as remote
sensing and GIS, it will also focus on the issues of immediate concern to the region, such as
growing pressures on land and water resources, its degradation, food shortage issues, increasing
risks of natural disasters and urbanization, and to explore the possibilities of arriving at a better
local, national and regional land use policy leading towards Sustainable land use development.

SESSION THEMES
The main themes of the Symposium will be:
LUCC (Land Use and Cover Change) Studies, Recent Activities
Integration of Remote Sensing and GIS for LUCC
Water Resources and LUCC
Food Supply and LUCC
Urbanization and LUCC

The submitted papers will be selected for Poster presentation under sessions organized based on
the above themes.

CALL FOR PAPERS
This is an open call for papers to be presented in this symposium. Those wishing to present their
papers at the symposium should submit the extended abstracts, as described in the Submission
section below, to the Symposium Secretariat by September 15th, 2001. The Program committee
will establish the conference program. Papers will be selected by the Program committee based
on its relevance to the conference and clarity of argument. Due to a limited financial support
available with the organizers, only authors of the papers selected for oral presentations will be
provided with financial support for attending the symposia.

REGISTRATION FEES
There is No registration fee for both the presenters and attendees of the Symposium.
