FIRST CALL
Second International Conference
 THE ROLE OF PERMAFROST ECOSYSTEMS
IN GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE
dedicated to 50th anniversary
of Experimental Forest Station Spasskaya Pad of IBPC SD RAS
10-15 August, 2002, Yakutsk,
The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia

Dear colleagues,

In 2002 we meet 50 years since foundation of the first forest station in North-East Russia
? "Spasskaya Pad" of Institute for Biological Problems of Cryolithozone (IBPC) of Siberian
Division of Russian Academy of Sciences (SD RAS). The station was established by Forest
and Wood Institute named after Sukachev V.N., Krasnoyarsk.
Hydrometeorological, pedological, zoological and forest investigations were carried out in
the forest station during 1954-90 under guidance of Prof. Pozdnyakov L.K. On the results
of the studies, over 100 papers and 10 monographs have been published in domestic
literature, which became standards for dendrologists, ecologists and biologists of
different profiles.
Since 1991, IBPC SD RAS conducts here researches on many international projects: Russian-
Japanese on Global Change, GAME-Siberia, PIN-Matra (Netherlands), TCOS-Siberia (EU) and
others. On the results of these researches, 12 symposia and workshops were held abroad, 2
conferences ? in Russia, and 18 thematic issues have been published, including 16 ones
abroad.
Currently, through the agency of a number of international organizations (Ministry of
Education and Agriculture of Japan, Agency for the Environment of Japan, Agriculture
Ministry of the Netherlands), a unique complex system for regional, continental and global
FluxNetWork is set on the base of the forest station "Spasskaya Pad" of IBPC SD RAS.
In 10-15 August 2002 we intend to hold an international scientific conference at the
station. The topic of the conference will include problems of dendrology and forest
management, biodiversity and the role of permafrost ecosystems in climate change.

Organizers and/or sponsors of the Conference:
Presidium of Siberian Division of Russian Academy of Sciences
Yakutsk Scientific Center of Siberian Division of Russian Academy of Sciences
