SECOND CIRCULAR
International Conference
 “THE ROLE OF PERMAFROST ECOSYSTEMS
IN GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE”
dedicated to 50th anniversary of the foundation
of the Institute for Biological Problems of Cryolithozone SD RAS
and Scientific Forest Station “Spasskaya Pad”
10-15 August 2002, Yakutsk,
The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia

Dear colleagues,

In the autumn of 1952 a biology institute was organized within Yakutsk Branch of AS
USSR, which in 2001 was accredited as the Institute for Biological Problems of
Cryolithozone SD RAS (IBPC SD RAS).
At the same time 50 years have passed since the establishment of the first scientific
forest station “Spasskaya Pad” in the North-East of Russia. The station was set by
Forest and Wood Institute named after Sukachev V.N., Krasnoyarsk, and functioned 40
years as its division.
Since 1991 the Institute for Biological Problems of Cryolithozone SD RAS has been
conducting researches on many international and inter-governmental projects such as
IGBP, GEWEX/GAME-Siberia, PIN-Matra, TCOS-Siberia and others.
At present, through the agency of a number of international organizations (Ministry of
Education and Agriculture of Japan, Agency for the Environment of Japan, Agriculture
Ministry of the Netherlands), a unique complex system for regional and global
ecological monitoring Tower Flux Network is set on the base of the forest station
"Spasskaya Pad" of IBPC SD RAS.
In this connection, the holding of an international conference is outlined on the base
of IBPC SD RAS from 10 to 15 August 2002. The topic of the conference includes
problems of dendrology and forest management, biodiversity and the role of permafrost
ecosystems in climate change.
