ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

An international conference is planned to mark the end of the EU PROMISE
project. PROMISE research is inter-disciplinary and applicable to end-users and
policy-makers. Presentations from development agency representatives and
end-users as well as from leading researchers in meteorology, hydrology and
agriculture will be included. Both scientists and end-users of monsoon research
are invited to participate in the meeting and it is hoped that a substantial
number of delegates from developing nations will attend.

We have sponsorship to fully fund approximately 40 delegates who would not
otherwise be able to participate in the meeting. Registration for the
conference will be free of charge for all participants.

The following topics will be covered:
* Seasonal predictability of monsoon climates
* Management of water resources and agriculture in monsoon-affected countries
* Impacts of anthropogenic climate change on hydrology, agriculture and natural
vegetation
* The future of integrated climate/impacts modelling for monsoon environments
* Data provision for scientists from monsoon-affected countries
* Use of seasonal forecasts as an operational tool
* Applications of crop and hydrological model output to decision-making
processes in developing countries
* Opportunites for further collaborative monsoon research between scientists and
end-users of monsoon research

Keynote speakers include: A. Challinor (CGAM, Reading, UK), M. Dingkuhn (CIRAD,
France), H. Douville (CNRM, Toulouse, France), R.Kumar Kolli (IITM, Pune,
India), K. Laval (LMD, France), D. Lawrence (CGAM, Reading, UK), L. Mearns
(NCAR, Colorado, USA), J. Meigh (CEH, Wallingford, UK), F. Molteni (ICTP,
Trieste, Italy), A. Morse (University of Liverpool, UK), J-F Royer (CNRM,
Toulouse, France), J. Shukla (COLA, Maryland, USA), J. Slingo (CGAM, Reading,
UK), C. Taylor (CEH, Wallingford, UK), P. Webster (Georgia Inst. of Technology,
USA).

The deadline for applications for funding, registration for the conference and
submission of abstracts is 15th November 2002. The application form can be
