Announcement and Call For Papers

Symposium on Water Resource and Its Variability in Asia in the 21st Century
March 1-2, 2004, Tsukuba, Japan

Water resource is a big issue, particularly in Asia where worldユs largest
population lives. There are many international activities, one of which is
the 3rd World Water Forum, which has been held at Kyoto, Japan in March
2003. The FourthAssessment Report (AR4) of the Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change (IPCC), which will be issued in 2007, has selected メwaterモ
asone of cross cutting themes across the science, impact and mitigation of
climate change.

The 3-year project メWater Resource and Its Variability in Asia in the 21st
Centuryモ started in FY2001 funded by MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture,
Sports, Science and Technology). The objective of this project is to assess
the changeof supply/demand situation in Asia during the 21st century, by
making most of the existing research framework for global water resource
projection, and by considering seasonal changes in demand for agricultural
water and future changes in crops and land use due to climate change. The
project consists three components: (1) Spatial andtemporal interpolation of
land use and land surface environment, (2) Projection of global and Asian
water circulation, and (3) Future perspective of variability of water
resource in Asia.

The symposium will be dedicated to present the major scientific results of
the project and discuss future directions.

Scientific sessions
(1) Land use and land surface environment
(2) Projection of global and Asian water circulation
(3) Future perspective of variability of water resource in Asia
