On the equation for the tundra surface heat balance

Kazanskiy, Alexander (1), Zolotokrylin, Alexander (1)

The paper discusses the results of measurements of components of heat balance equation of tundra surface near Tiksi (Eastern Siberia), in particular the results of Japanese research team expedition held in 1998-1999. These results lead to a controversial conclusion about the absence of surface heat balance accomplishment. Subsequently this conclusion needs an explanation. Elimination of this controversion is proposed in the report. This is based on the fact that a heat balance component arising of vertical heat movement in filtration flow of melted water, produced upon surface soil melting, remained unnoticed. This filtration flow takes place on the slope along the upper soil layer just under its surface. According to our data the velocity of this filtration flow is noticeable due to catchment area being very steep towards the bed of the river flowing out of it. According to A.B.Kazansky's "theory of advective diffusion in porous media", i.e. in our case vertical, filtration heat transfer arises. A similar case, air filtration flow along the upper layer of sand in desert, was described by us in the paper A.B.Kazanskiy and A.N.Zolotokrylin "On the missing component in the equation for the land surface heat balance as applied to the heat exchange between the desert or semidesert surface and the atmosphere" (Boundary-Layer Meteorology 71: 189-195, 1994), where along with calculation formula we shortly described physical mechanism leading to the production of this vertical filtration heat transfer. According to our evaluation using Kazansky theory and taking into account the velocity of melted water and soil characteristics, a new heat balance component leading to its realisation appears.
