Tamporal variation of stable isotopes in precipitation compared between Jakarta and Jayapura, Indonesia

Kimpei Ichiyanagi (1), Atusi Numaguti (2), Manabu Yamanaka (3)

The isotope group of Frontier Observational Research System for Global Change (FORSGC) started precipitation sampling at two stations in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to understand the heat and water circulations of Asian monsoon, especially land-sea and atmosphere-ocean interactions in the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean, and their relations. The monthly averaged stable isotopes (Oxygen-18, Deuterium) in precipitation and meteorological data at Jakarta and Jayapura, which are provided by the Global Network for Isotopes in Precipitation (GNIP) project cooporated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Time series of monthly averaged Oxygen-18 anomaly of precipitation in Jakarta during 1962-95 and Jayapura during 1961-93 are calculated. The Oxygen-18 anomaly of precipitation is defined by the deviation from the average for the corresponding month in the whole period, and normalized by their standard deviation. Temporal variations of anomalies of Oxygen-18 at Jakarta and Jayapura show a strong negative correlation during 1980s. The anomalies of Oxygen-18 are relatively high at Jakarta and low at Jayapura during 1980-81, but those are relatively low at Jakarta and high at Jayapura during 1983-87. In case of other periods, there are no relations in temporal variations of anomalies of Oxygen-18 between Jakarta and Jayapura. It is expected that temporal variations of stable isotopes in precipitation at Jakalta and Jayapura are influenced by the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean, respectively. In future, the large-scale circulation field will be considered by use of a global reanalyses dataset.
