Determination of the aerodynamic roughness parameters under a very unstable condition over@tropical complex terrain.

Motomu TODA (1), Michiaki Sugita (2)

Surface roughness parameters at regional scale were evaluated with the data sets obtained mainly from sonic anemometers mounted on a 120-m meteorological tower a over complex terrain in central part of Thailand (99'25'47.5''E, 16'56'23.5''N), which is one of the main observational sites of GEWEX Asian Monsoon Experiment (GAME). The topography around the experimental field is essentially flat with a very gentle undulation except for a 100-m high hill approximately 1.5 km east of the tower. The surrounding area has several types of land cover, which consist of mainly evergreen and deciduous forests with their height ranging from 5 to 20 m, as well as of paddy fields, grasslands, farmlands, grazing, water reservoirs and villages within a radius of about 20 km of the observational tower. However, the complexity of land conditions would be considered statistically homogeneous on a regional scale. The analysis was made of the determination for the aerodynamic roughness parameters. Aerodynamic roughness length z0 was calculated using a profile method based on the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory. Temperature Variance Method was used to derive zero plane displacement d0. These procedure produced the value of d0
