To evaluate water budget of a hill evergreen forest in northern Thailand, rainfall and runoff rate have been observed in Kog-Ma experimental watershed near Chiang Mai city since February 1997 as part of GAME-T project, following previous observation conducted at same site from 1966 to 1980. This watershed is located at 98.9E, 18.8N and at an altitude of about 1300m. Drainage area of the watershed at the observation weir is 8.79ha consisting of weathered granite and is covered by a mix stand of evergreen species, such as Castanopsis,, Lithocarpus etc. Runoff water is continuously observed throughout year. Mean annual rainfall, discharge and loss during observation period are 1572mm/yr, 747mm/yr and 825mm/yr, respectively. Observed hydrograph has been reproduced successfully by using Hycy Model, a popular conceptual model with hourly rainfall data and estimated evapotranspiration rate. Most discharge water run off as base flow and direct runoff is estimated to be 2.3 percent of rainfall. Large seasonal change of water storage in a watershed is estimated and the difference between the maximum and the minimum value of watershed storage is more than 700mm. Quite slow recession of base flow caused by large capacity of underground water storage is also characteristics of this watershed.
