Abstract: An experimental basin was established in the Khuwae Noi River basin, which is a tributary of the Nan River in the northeast of the Chao Phraya River basin, Thailand, in February 1996 to clarify the role of the basinfs water balance in a tropical region. In this presentation, the regional water balance and energy balance in the KhwaeNoi River basin using the 3-year observation data is discussed. 1. Water balance: Annual values of each water balance component were estimated. The average annual rainfall amount was 1,367 mm in three years. The average annual run-off amount was 397 mm. The evapotranspiration was calculated by the advection-aridity method (Brutsert and Stricker, 1979) in this study. Though Priestley and Taylor concluded that the best estimation of the coefficient is 1.26, it was used 1.0 in this analysis. Resulting, The average annual evapotranspiration was 983 mm in three years. The volume of the water retention in the basin was calculated from the water balance. As a result, the peak volumes of the water retention were 499 mm in Sep. 1996, 279 mm in Sep. 1997 and 243 mm in Sep. 1998, assuming that the volume of the water retention was 50 mm in March 1996. The minimum volumes were 19 mm in June 1997 and -73 mm in April 1998. 2. Energy balance: Annual values of each energy balance component were calculated. The latent heat flax was estimated from evapotranspiration calculated by the advection-aridity method. The sensible heat flax was calculated using the energy balance. The average net radiation in three years was 3,658E+6J/m2/year. The latent heat flax, the sensible heat flax and the heat flow to the ground in three years was 2,408E+6J/m2/year, 1,244E+6J/m2/year and -4E+6J/m2/year, respectively.
