Development of cold region studies of GAME under the new program WCRP-CliC

Tetsuo Ohata (1)

In the GAME Project, the land surface and atmospheric processes in cold regions were studied from various aspects and at various sites such as Tibet, Siberia and Mongolia. Since GAME will terminate at least its phase 1 in 2001, with possibility of extending its analysis part for two or three years more, we need to deploy the measurement network and study issues which need to be tackles more in some way. I consider that the part of cold region study which is being done would be appropriate to be continued under the newly started WCRP Project named CliC(Climate and Cryosphere) in conjuction with GEWEX. CliC is a project which encourages and promotes research into the cryosphere and its interaction as part of the global climate system. Although CliC focus at wide range of cryosphere, snow cover and permafrost studies, heat/water exchange occurring on surface, hydrological aspects and atmospheric response above the cold region which has been done intensively in GAME is able to be organized under this framework. New framework will incoaporate related new communities and researchers, and resultantly will be able to hold new ideas, so that unsolved issues in GAME will have a place to be investigated further.
